Namaste Friends, It is with a heavy heart that I wish to share the passing of a dear friend and one of the original teachers at OYP, brother Judah. Judah and I have been friends for over ten years, he played on a musical Cd we had put out with the band Vivian Section and also started the drumming classes at OYP when we first opened. This is really just a small glimpse into all that he brought to this world. His spirit is so big that this world could only contain him for a short while and those of us blessed to meet this beautiful spirit are that much more alive because of him! Much love and continue to take life one precious breath at a time!

Having practiced and taught Yoga for a number of years I wanted to share with you my friends the love and the understanding I have for Ashtanga Yoga. This may help some of you understand why I am such a fan, after all, perception plays a key role in our pleasure and suffering.

When I first began practicing Yoga I found Kundalini Yoga a system of Yoga that is ancient and extremely powerful in it’s ability to transform and heal. I loved it! After moving to Florida I found Iyengar style yoga and then Ashtanga soon thereafter. I loved the alignment of Iyengar Yoga and the movement of Ashtanga, but as I was young and easily distracted I became enamoured with the creativity and freedom of Vinyasa style yoga. To clarify; vinyasa is essentially a hybrid of the 3 series of Ashtanga and is woven together by the teacher based on their expression of sequencing. This can be a wonderful experience if the teacher is talented and intelligent in their sequencing capabilities, however this is not always the case.

As Yoga teachers can become competitive with themselves or other teachers in their sequencing style and the push to be different and creative in sequencing can lead to a nonsensical sequence that leaves yogis in an unbalanced state.

After many years of having a fun, creative teaching style and practice I was drawn back to the basics and committed to an Ashtanga home practice. This is when I feel that I really grew as a practicioner and as a teacher! The consistency of sequencing allowed my mind and body to develop a level of trust that I could not reach with the constant change of other styles of creative yoga. Was I bored you ask? Well, maybe in the beginning the mind looks for distractions but after a while it falls into a beautiful state of calm- because it knows where it is going and it can let go! Imagine giving the mind a single focus- like on the breath- and letting it ride… because the body knows where it is going the mind can stay in a state of focus. My physical body transformed as did my body awareness, again due to consistency. You may be familiar with the saying “Jack of all trades master of none” , well that is what a mixed practice can create-A “confused yogi”.

What about  all the different asanas (postures) you get to try out in other  classes. Well first ask yourself why do you practice? Each asana has  specific benefits and the theory behind the three series is;

1) Yoga Chikitsa (Yoga Therapy)-the primary series moves through the first layer clearing the heavy stuff out of the way. Cleansing major organs and strenghtening our core, when so many of us come to yoga plugged in to the outside world this is the first guidance to connect back to ourselves. This begins to strengthen our knowledge that we are more than enough! We are more than this, what we see.

It helps to loosen the grip of the root kleshas (hindrances/obstacles).

Avidya- ignorance of who we truly are.

The primary series is often likened to a farmer tilling the soil in preparation.

2) Nadi Shodhana (Purification of the Nervous System). However, this translation needs to be broadened in it’s understanding to include much more than just the physical nervous system. Moving beyond the gross body here we bring balance to the subtle energy body. Here we are clearing our passages to optimizes our flow of vitality. Often humans feel that it is due to age that they lose their vitality, here we are presented with the knowledge that to increase our vitality we are offerred the opportunity to unclog our pipes and allow our vitality to flow!

3)Sthira Bhaga (Divine Steadiness) Much like a flower which has strong roots deep in to the earth to create stablity yet also has the grace to grow upwards with lightness so that it may radiate with the sun and be able to sustain itself during winds, rains and various shifts in nature- The third series is that divine balance for the ashtanga practicioner.

Ashtanga is an 8 limbed practice beyond the asana practice. This gives us techniques that we can use in our everyday life. According to ashtangayoga.com ” Ashtanga Yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.”

The greatest obstacle I find when teaching & practicing ashtanga yoga is the “end gaming” of the ego mind. I teach from the same place as my teacher Manju Jois and that is that it can be for everybody. Modify modify modify- Let your ego move aside and let the mind focus on a balanced ujayi breath, rather than what you can or cannot do. So get yourself out of the way and let the magic happen. Much love and peace…see you in practice, Margarida

Ear, nose, and throat surgeons recommend nasal irrigation with a Neti pot or other method for their patients who’ve undergone sinus surgery, to clear away crusting in the nasal passages. Many patients with chronic sinus symptoms from bacterial infections, allergies, and environmental irritants also have begun to regularly use the Neti pot or other nasal irrigation devices, claiming that these devices alleviate congestion, facial pain and pressure, and reduce the need for antibiotics and nasal sprays. Research backs up these claims, finding that nasal irrigation can be an effective way to relieve sinus symptoms when used along with standard sinus treatments.

The basic explanation of how the Neti pot works is that it thins mucus to help flush it out of the nasal passages, according to David Rabago, MD, assistant professor in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and a leading researcher on nasal irrigation.

A more biological explanation for how the Neti pot works has to do with tiny, hair-like structures called cilia that line the inside of the nasal and sinus cavities. These cilia wave back and forth to push mucus either to the back of the throat where it can be swallowed, or to the nose to be blown out. “Chronic sinus problems cause the cilia to beat in a slow and uncoordinated way,” Rabago explains. Saline solution can help increase the speed and improve coordination of the cilia so that they may more effectively remove the bacteria, allergens, and other irritants that cause sinus problems, he says.

1. Prepare the Saline Solution

Generally most people find that non-iodized table salt is the best source of the salt for mixing the saline solution. We do not recommend the use of sea salt as it is sometimes too strong and may irritate. Mix approximately 1/4 teaspoon of fine table salt into about 1 cup (8 oz.) of warm water, until it is fully dissolved. The water should be warm, but not hot. It should feel pleasantly warm to the touch so as to not irritate your nasal passages with either too hot or too cold water. Never use either HOT or COLD water. You may prefer to use bottled water if your local water supply is too hard or has chemicals or an unappealing taste.

2. Fill your Nasal Cleansing Pot

Once you have the saline solution mixed, pour it into the Nasal Cleansing Pot. You may choose to actually mix it right in the pot to save a step.

3. The Process of Nasal Cleansing

Nasal Cleansing is best done as part of a regular hygiene routine. As you will have saline water flowing and mucus being discharged, it is best to practice this process over a sink or basin.

Tilt your head to the side as shown. You will notice that when you get the proper angle, the water will flow easily from the upper nostril and out the lower nostril. It takes just a little bit of practice to get it just right. This is the most important factor in a successful nasal wash. Don’t be afraid to adjust your head slightly to get the most comfortable angle for your own personal practice. You should find that having your forehead at an angle about the same level as your chin will be just right.

Insert spout of Nasal Cleansing Pot gently into the raised nostril and create a seal between the Pot and your nostril.

Raise the Nasal Cleansing Pot slowly to develop a steady flow of saline solution through the upper nostril and out the lower nostril. You are in total control of the flow of the saline water by the way you hold the pot. The higher you hold it, the faster the flow. Try to find the right flow just for you by raising the pot slowly while you hold your head in the correct position.

During the process breathe through your mouth. The angle of your head is important to allow you to breath easily through your mouth during the process. If you do not have sufficient angle to keep your forehead at about the level of your chin or just slightly higher than your chin, you will find water draining into your mouth. If this happens as you get to know the process, simply adjust the angle of your head to bring the forehead more or less in line with your chin and start over again.

Upon completion of the process, exhale gently several times to clear the nasal passages. You may want to use a tissue to catch any excess mucus.

Reverse the tilt of your head and repeat the process on the other side. Some people find they can clear both sides with one pot full of saline solution, but most people prefer using an entire potful for each nostril.

Once you get into practice, the entire process only takes a couple of minutes.

4. Completion of the Process

It is beneficial to do some simple gentle exhalation blowing through both of your nostrils after completion. Either do this over a sink or into a tissue. Be sure to not close off your nostrils as you blow as you are trying to expel the excess solution and any residual mucus.

Some people find it beneficial to do some side or forward bending to allow easier drainage. Experiment with this to find out what works best for you.

5. Cleaning your Nasal Cleansing Pot

After use, simply wash out the pot with warm water and dish soap and rinse away all soap and other residues. We have made our device out of sturdy food-grade porcelain so that it is dishwasher safe if you prefer.

6. Cautions and Warnings

While most people can safely and conveniently use this product, please note the following. If you are unable to blow your nose, you should not use this product except under the specific care and recommendation of your health care practitioner. Children using the product should be aided by a responsible adult. As with your toothbrush, you should not share your Nasal Cleansing Pot with others. If you have any chronic illness or health condition, or if you experience any kind of discomfort or nosebleed, do not use this product except under the specific guidance of your health care practitioner.

Ashtanga is the eight limbed path that involves one’s entire being beyond the physical. Each limb provides the individual with the techniques, understanding and the practice of Yoga. The foundation of the Yamas and Niyamas provide the ethics and groundwork that the student begins with. The asana practice creates the playground for the physical body to maintain harmony. The pranayma practice is essential to our vitality. Pratyahara is the bridgewhich guides a practice in inner attention and sensitivity. Dhyana is the lesson in concentration which grants us the opportunity to focus our energy. Dharana is the practice of absorption in energy. Samadhi is the branch that points us back to ourselves and yoga.

Vinyasa draws from the ashtanga sequences and is then creatively engineered by a teacher and will vary based on the teacher’s theme, focus, spiritual influence and creativity. In this training in addition to learning the ashtanga sequence we will also study intelligent and safe ways to sequence a fluid vinyasa class. In this teacher teacher training there will be special attention paid to alignment and how to incorporate this into teaching asanas in a flow. We will take an in depth look at the 8 limbs of Ashtanga. Students will learn how to properly assist, how to instruct meditation, pranayama, mantras and chanting. There will be a mix of analytical training and how to teach and practice traditional Yoga techniques. We will cover both bodily systems and energy systems of anatomy and physiology. There will also be guest sessions in Anatomy with guest teacher Pete Whitridge and Ayurveda studies with Amba Greene. Yoga Philosophy and lifestyle will be studied delving into Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita. Also Nada Yoga (Yoga of Sound), including sanskrit, mantras, chants and kirtan. The curriculum will include the business aspects of Yoga and the ethics of teaching. Practicum will include practice teaching, hands on assisting, observation of others teaching and giving/receiving feedback. The teaching portion will cover both Ashtanga and a vinyasa class.*Training requirements involve a minimum of two additional classes per week and three assisting classes.

Purge Day the fifth day.

Last night I took the purgative herbs, I opted out of the castor oil as I am still breastfeeding Fiona and know how powerful castor oil can be on many levels. This cleanse for me was meant as a spring renewal and light cleanse as I know that whatever I am experiencing Fiona too will experience. I really noticed this when I ate asparagus and her pee diaper smelled just like asparagus! From then on I became super aware of how what I ingested made its way into her system and that included anything I ingested emotionally and mentally. So this cleanse was the shoreline for the wave of mindful vitality and letting go that I had begun week’s prior. Today day 5 was a gentle purge and I appreciated its effectiveness. I’ll spare you the details. I treated myself to a shiatsu therapy with one of my fave transformation energy workers Tim Gosney. If you haven’t had the pleasure of working with him I encourage you to seek him out. Moreover, this week I meet with Amba for some special Ayurvedic treatments that are customized to what will support my being during the tail end of the cleanse and this spring season. In finishing I am feeling good and light on a physical, mental and emotional level even though I have had a very demanding and challenging week. I have also become more aware of my oil consumption and when I say this I mean “good oils” such as Omega 3,6,9 and essential fats. I can say this has been the most nourishing and gentle cleanse I have ever done and yet I feel the benefits. Perhaps as I age I am beginning to gain wisdom in balance. In my younger years I would have gone “off the charts” with an extreme approach to the cleanse, yet I feel that in letting my body’s intelligence take over rather than my mind’s drive I have taken the middle road and enjoyed the view while reaching my destination in a safe and peaceful fashion. Peace, Margarida

I woke up this morning feeling pretty good, considering I had not slept very well as I was up with Fiona. Possibly the kirtan at Shimmering Pines with Scott’s teachers in training up’d my vitality. I had been excited for the Spring class at 9:30 and prepped for it all morning. It was a great turn out of 30 amazing people and really focused energy. After wards some of us gathered around Amba and her beautiful strawberries (there was homemade halva too but seeing as I couldn’t have anymore fat after my 6 teaspoon helping of ghee earlier I savored the berries) and connected about how the cleanse was going. I have to say that all the participants who had already purged, had this beautiful calm energy to them. It was really magnetic and attractive. I purge tonight, well actually I take the herbs that elicit the purge this eve before bed. Since the beginning of the cleanse I have had intense dreams. I am an avid dreamer and relish the time I get to move about in the dream time. However, these dreams have been major processing dreams full of heavy events and experience, I guess I am just working what I can out in my dreams. Unlike some of the other “cleansers” I have not suffered from headaches even after giving up coffee. I am feeling a little prego again and possibly it is all the extra food as I have consistent hunger. I tell Amba this and she says “that’s good”, so I feel relieved that this extra nourishment is healthy. Well tomorrow is the big day, I better get some rest. Well I can be hopeful…

Spring begins today and with it’s coming we honor the shift to the latter part of the kapha season. Looking around me in nature I see the shifts in the warmer temperatures, the sun shining and the birds happily singing the arrival of this shift. In our own nature;s we too have a shift that begins to thaw winter’s hold and create a lighter essence in our minds, bodies and hearts. Although, this is not always the case, often our spring bodies can still exhibit the qualities of the imbalances of kapha such as lethargy, heaviness and congestion. So in order to move into a space of spring in our beings some modifications to our diets, our asana practice and our pranayama practice can help to create the space in which we can shed unwanted ama (toxins) or the qualities of Kapha that no longer serve us.

I had personally seen the build up of ama in my body with an increase of congestion in the mornings that had lasted through the better part of my day. Since day 2 of this cleanse I had noticed that the mucous and congestion had significantly decreased. Now on day 3 the lessening of the mucous and congestion has continued and what is there is much lighter and clearer. By day three I no longer feel the heaviness in my core that had me feeling 3 months pregnant, it could be the extra triphala I took on night 2. Moreover, Amba (our Ayurvedic practicioner) wanted us to eat breakfast something I rarely do, as I am not hungry in the mornings. Yet since the cleanse I have been quite hungry in the mornings and have found myself eating possibly more than usual. I guess today I’ll go for more local fresh fruit if I can source it as I prepare for the purge tomorrow night. As for the 9am class tomorrow I am inspired to create a spring honoring class that will help to provide a vehicle for my friends to find a spring in their step. Peace, M
